Did you ever wonder where the expression, "It'll cost you an arm and a leg." came from?
In George Washington's days and before there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one hand behind his back while others showed his legs and both arms.
Prices charged by painters or sculptors were based not only on how many people were to be in the work of art, but how many 'limbs' were to be included. Arms and legs are 'limbs' and they and especially hands, being more difficult to render, commanded higher prices. Hence the expression, "OK, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg."
